I have these sentence frames posted in my class: I learned many things about ________. One thing I learned... Another thing... Also, ... In addition... These are some things I learned about ____________. Each page is set up for writing an informative paragraph on a 3rd grade, VA social studies SOL. At the top of each quick write page is a word bank with helpful vocabulary words. This is a great way to provide support for your ELLs and struggling spellers. At the bottom of each quick write is a quick rubric for grading SS and Writing. This is a great way to bring SS content into writing as well as writing into SS. I have also included a blank template so you can print and hand-write to use these as quick writes or as tickets out the door. *My county gives letter grades for 3rd grade, but feel free to message if you would like it edited to fit your needs! I used the same "Three things I learned about..." template for integrating 2nd grade social studies SOLs into writing. My students became strong, nonfiction writers and writing about their learning helped them to solidify content vocabulary. 2nd grade file with VA social studies AND science SOLs:

I am currently a third grade teacher. My third grade team is departmentalized, so I have the pleasure of teaching LA and social studies to two groups of students. Before teaching third grade, I was a second grade teacher for three years and prior to that I spent a year as an instructional support teacher for reading (K-2 LTS). I have recently earned my Masters degree in education with a focus on Teachers for Speakers of Other Languages (TSOL).
