Detailed Description

This lesson is designed to introduce students to the foundations of government. Government units often begin with an exploration of enlightenment ideas about government. This lesson uses Hobbes' "state of nature" to show students why government is necessary. It also shows students how laws are designed to address problems in society. Students are confronted with a scenario in which a zombie virus has eliminated all government structure from the world. Students imagine themselves as part of a small group of survivors who must rebuild society. First, students consider what types of problems might arise in a "state of nature" situation. Then students collaborate with small groups during a station based activity to create laws that solve five likely problems that might occur in this "state of nature." Finally, students reflect on who should create those laws. This lesson creates an exciting hook to get students thinking about why government exists and allows you to transition into teaching types of government.
