Build a Main Idea and Supporting Detail Snowman Students read supporting details and sort the snowman body parts based on which main idea hat they support. Pages 3-6 are a set of four snowmen with one being blank to record a main idea and three supporting details of their own. Page 7-10 is a differentiated set of three snowmen with one being blank to record main idea and three supporting details from their own reading. I printed passages from Reading A-Z for my kiddos. You may have all of your students read the same passage or choose passages based on their reading levels. My students loved the passage, Now That’s a Big Bird from ReadWorks.org (If you do not have Reading A-Z, ReadWorks is Free!) http://www.readworks.org/sites/default/files/1060_now_thats_a_big_bird--passage.pdf Students first cut out the hats then the bodies and sort the supporting detail, snowballs based on which hat they support. P.S. This activity can double as a cross curricular science connection with a main idea of the three states of matter.

I am currently a third grade teacher. My third grade team is departmentalized, so I have the pleasure of teaching LA and social studies to two groups of students. Before teaching third grade, I was a second grade teacher for three years and prior to that I spent a year as an instructional support teacher for reading (K-2 LTS). I have recently earned my Masters degree in education with a focus on Teachers for Speakers of Other Languages (TSOL).
